“Chess is fun,” said Zhazel Dye, H.M. King High School Freshmen. “It’s challenging, but you get to enjoy it with
your friends.”
Students represented all KISD Campuses and the event showcased the year-long preparation of the participants.
“Chess gives our children the opportunity to interact with students from other campuses”, said Joanna Cruz, KISD Parent. “They’re able to express the skills they have learned in practice.”
Participants sported black t-shirts with gold lettering that read “Kingsville Chess”. All campus chess sponsors helped students through the tournament process and provided them with free drinks and snacks.
“The tournament was a great success”, said Jessica Garcia, Perez Elementary Chess Sponsor. “The students had
fun and enjoyed themselves.
KISD hosted an awards ceremony at the end of the tournament. Every student that competed received a tournament ribbon and the division winners received trophies.
Peter Pitts, the tournament director, was thrilled with the success of our first tournament.
“Chess builds problem-solving skills and forces students to think about the consequences of their actions”, he said. “The excitement generated by this tournament will help make the KISD Chess program even better next year.”
KISD would like to thank all chess sponsors for their hard work throughout the year which made this tournament possible; and to our parents for supporting our Chess program.
