Kingsville ISD Students Advance to Texas State Science Competition

Eighth grader Veronica Cruz received a first place ranking for her “Enzymes” project in the Junior Division of Biochemistry.

“My project was mostly about identifying how acids and bases affect enzymes,” Veronica said. “My favorite part so far has been getting first place, and I’m very excited for the state competition.”

Mia Trevino grew bacteria to compare the effectiveness of different house-held cleaners and their bacteria-killing powers for her “Bacteria Wars” science fair project. Mia placed second in the Junior Division of Cellular and Molecular Biology.

“I’m very excited about going to the state completion,” Mia said. “I’ve enjoyed working on my project and I’m excited to meet the other students and compare our projects.”

Ariana Jimenez, Memorial Middle School eighth grader, received third place in the Junior Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Her project, titled “Lights, Camera, Beauty”, was about using the Golden Ratio as a marker for identifying beauty through the measurement of facial characteristics.

“I’m most excited about seeing everyone’s projects,” Ariana said. “My favorite part of this process has been meeting a lot of new people, and I’m excited about the state competition.”

In addition, Kingsville ISD had two students in the elementary division and one student in the intermediate division bring home winning projects. Jocelyn Chavez, 1st grader at Perez Elementary, received second place in the Elementary Division of Life/Health Science category for her “Magnificent Cereals” science project. Madeline Sanfilippo, 3rd grader at Harrel Elementary, placed second in the Elementary Division of Life/Health Science category for her “Superstitious” science project. Haward Williams, 5th grader at Gillett Intermediate, placed third in the Intermediate Division of Engineering/Math/Physical Science category for his “One of a Kind Cooker” project.

Each year, Kingsville ISD hosts their annual District Science Fair. This year, 36 Kingsville ISD students advanced to the Coastal Bend Science Fair in Corpus Christ, Texas, which took place on February 21, 2015; and now, three students will attend the state competition to represent Kingsville ISD. The ExxonMobil Texas State Science & Engineering Fair will take place March 27 through March 29 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Kingsville ISD is extremely proud of all its students who dedicated their time to these wonderful and creative projects. A big thank you to the educators who have guided our KISD students into the field of science: Christela Mendietta and Esperanza DeLeon of Perez Elementary; Wendy Sanfilippo and Alyssa Rodriguez of Harrel Elementary; Brian Smith and Anthony Duncan of Gillett Intermediate; and Angela Chavez of Memorial Middle School.

Thank you, teachers, for guiding our students throughout this process and for all that you do for the students of KISD. Good luck to all our Brahmas advancing to state.
